Park Overview
Selous Game Reserve, it is also known as The Nyerere National Park , one of Africa’s largest protected areas, spanning over 30,000 km² in southern Tanzania. It's renowned for its remote wilderness, boat safaris on the Rufiji River and rich biodiversity. The park is home to large populations of elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs and over 440 bird species. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to its ecological importance. Unlike the more touristy northern parks, Selous offers a quieter, off the beaten path safari experience. The reserve was named after British explorer Frederick Selous and was originally established in the early 1900s for hunting and conservation.
